Dental insurance is provided to eligible members working at the craft and their families. Members are eligible for this insurance after they complete one year of railroad service. A members must also work seven days in a calendar month to be eligible for this insurance the following month.

Dental benefits covered under this plan are orthodontic treatment, prosthodontics (dentures), jaw Joint disorder, x-rays, extractions, oral surgery, composite filling restoration to restore diseased or accidentally broken teeth, general anesthetics, treatment of periodontal and other gum diseases, root canal therapy, crowns, inlays, onlays, bridgework, and preventive cleaning services.

New Aetna/US Healthcare Preferred Dental Network

Aetna/US Healthcare announced that those covered under the National Dental Plan now have access to a Preferred Dental Network which is described on pages 6 and 7 of the new booklet. The Aetna /US Healthcare Preferred Dental network will enable all eligible participants to receive discounts when using a participating dentist.

The advantages to using a participating dentist are:

Negotiated discounts usually mean lower out-of-pocket expenses.

There are no claim forms to complete. Participating dentist will submit claims for you. Some dentists may bill you at the time of the service.

Discounts extended to services not covered by the Plan usually mean lower costs to the covered person.

Effective January 1, 1999 dental benefits provided by Aetna/US Healthcare National Dental Plan covering railroad employees will be improved.

Among improvements are the following:

Annual maximum per individual is increased to $1,500.00;

Lifetime maximum for orthodontics is increased to $1,000.00;

Medically necessary implants are covered at a 50% benefit rate (type "C");

Repair of existing implants is covered at the 80% benefit rate (type "B"); and

Sealants for children under 14 are covered at the 100% benefit rate (type "A");

Overall (type "B") benefits were increased from 75% to an 80% rate of coverage.
